More AT&T, SBC information
On Jan. 31, 2005, SBC Communications Inc. and AT&T announced an agreement for SBC to acquire AT&T, a combination that created the country's top communications company with great global reach. The merger combines AT&T's systems capabilities, business and government customers, and fast-growing Internet protocol (IP)-based business with SBC's extraordinary local exchange, broadband and wireless solutions. Both companies have common values focused on customer service, innovation and reliability.
The combined company will have robust, high-quality network assets, both in the United States and around the globe, and complementary expertise and capabilities. It will have the resources and skill sets to innovate and more quickly deliver to customers the next generation of advanced, integrated IP-based wireline and wireless communications services.
On June 30, 2005 AT&T stockholders, meeting in Denver, approved the merger. Later (October 27, 2005) the U.S. Department of Justice cleared the merger, and the Federal Communications Commission approved it on October 31, 2005. Finally, the merger was completed on November 18, 2005. At that point, SBC changed its name to AT&T Inc., and updated the former AT&T's graphic logo. The combined company began trading on the New York Stock Exchange under the historic "T" stock ticker symbol. To differentiate from the preceding company, AT&T is now formally known as "AT&T Inc." The former company was "AT&T Corp."
On Friday December 29, 2006, AT&T was approved by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to acquire BellSouth, valued at approximately $86 billion (or 1.325 shares of AT&T for each share of BellSouth at the close of trading December 29, 2006). Again, the new merged company kept the name AT&T. This deal consolidated ownership of Cingular Wireless and Yellowpages.com. The two were once joint ventures between BellSouth and AT&T. All services, high speed internet, phone service, including wireless, are currently offered under the AT&T name.
